Donald Trump asserted his authority during the 52nd G7 Summit in France, where leaders discussed a United States-Iran agreement, a $300 billion reconstruction plan, support for Ukraine’s air defenses and additional sanctions on Russia. Trump also met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after 16 months, while differences over Ukraine exposed lingering divisions among Western allies.
Hosted by France from June 15 to June 17 in Évian-les-Bains, the summit focused on a United States-Iran agreement that lifted oil sanctions, a proposed reconstruction package worth $300 billion, and a 60-day window for nuclear negotiations. Leaders also discussed strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and imposing additional sanctions on Russia amid continuing tensions.
On the sidelines of the summit, President Trump held talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the first time in 16 months. During the meeting, Trump praised Modi’s negotiating abilities and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to supporting India through defense cooperation. Modi, in turn, raised concerns over the deaths of three Indian seafarers in a United States tanker strike.
The gathering concluded with leaders issuing a joint statement that praised Trump’s leadership regarding Iran. However, his approach toward the Ukraine conflict prompted cautious reactions among several European leaders, reflecting differing views within the group on the ongoing crisis.
The summit underscored the significance of international coordination on security, energy and reconstruction efforts, while also highlighting divisions among major powers over the future course of the Ukraine conflict and broader global stability.
